Prestigious National Award for Former St. Pat’s Student Gearoid Coffey

Former St. Patrick’s Secondary School student, Gearóid Coffey, Springmount, Farranfore (right) is the latest winner of The Farmers Journal sponsored Marty Barrett Award which is presented to the student who achieves the highest marks in the Leaving Certificate Agricultural Science paper. Mr. Coffey praised his former teacher, Kevin Fitzgerald for helping him to achieve the award through his studies.

There was great delight in St. Patrick’s Secondary School recently when the news arrived that one of the Leaving Cert students of 2021, Gearóid Coffey of Springmount, Farranfore, had achieved the top marks in the country for Leaving Certificate Agricultural Science.

The Farmers Journal sponsored Marty Barrett Award is presented each year to the student who achieves the highest marks in the Leaving Certificate Agricultural Science paper.

Praise for Teacher

Mr. Coffey praised his former teacher, Kevin Fitzgerald in helping him to achieve the award through his studies.

He recently attended the awards ceremony held by the Irish Agricultural Science Teachers Association to accept this prestigious accolade.

Gearóid is now a student of University Limerick, studying PE and Maths Education. He has a keen interest in sports and also continues to help out his parents Siobhán and Frank on their dairy farm at home.

Excellence in Education

“Congratulations to both him and his teacher Kevin Fitzgerald on continuing this level of excellence in education,” said Tim Long, deputy principal at St. Pat’s.

“This is the second time in four years that the top marks in Ireland have been achieved by a student of St. Patrick’s Secondary School.

“Padraig Broderick, won this award for Leaving Certificate 2017, Padraig has gone on to put this knowledge to good use as he is now a very successful herd manager in North Cork.

“Everyone in the school wishes Gearóid all the best in his future studies and career,” said Mr. Long.
