Scartaglen native Shauna O’Keeffe is a Transition Year student at Castleisland Community College.

Shauna decided to create a video entry to the ‘I WISH‘ competition which encourages female students to participate in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

This is led by a volunteer community committed to showcasing the power of STEM to female secondary school students.

The World is Ours

This year the title of the competition was ‘The World is Ours.’ The project involved making a video / poem / blog or painting about a world problem that a student is passionate about and solve it using STEM.

Shauna’s entry revolved around a solution to climate change by using bins with sensors that would open only if the item being deposited was for that particular bin.

One of Three Winners

She was one of three winners in the country and won a Dell laptop and a Fitbit.

The competition was a showcase event that ran over four days in Ireland where, to date, the I Wish organisation has hosted 22,000 girls from 26 counties and has welcomed over 300 teachers per year.
