Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley welcomes the announcement of a new €50 million scheme targeting the waste water collection and treatment needs of villages and settlements without access to public waste water services.

This announcement follows the completion of a review by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage of villages and settlements that do not have access to public waste water infrastructure.

Detailed Survey Completed

This work included consultation with stakeholders and a detailed survey completed by local authorities of villages and settlements in their area not serviced by waste water collection and treatment systems.

The first phase of funding announced today will focus on areas of most need based on housing and environmental criteria.

Local Authority Proposals

Local authorities are now being invited to submit proposals for consideration for funding under this new measure.

Minister Foley said that improving the quality of waste water treatment and collection is imperative to support, cultivate and progress the development of sustainable rural communities.

“I welcome this funding which will provide a vital boost to local economies and enrich rural villages with sustainable housing projects,”  said Minister Foley.
