Cordal GAA Club Tribute

In response to the news that one of their founding club-men had fallen, Cordal GAA Club paid the following, well informed tribute to Jerry’s considerable contribution and involvement in sowing the seeds for the club they have today.

“Back in 1983 Jerry served as club chairman when he, along with other club officers had the huge task of identifying and purchasing a suitable grounds for the club.

Proud Cordal Clubman

Many years of hard work by Jerry and his dedicated colleagues fund-raised for and developed the grounds as much as possible with the limited funds they had at the time and Jerry was club secretary for many years too.

He was a very proud Cordal club-man when Cordal seniors won the county junior championship in 1986 while he was serving as secretary.

He was also club treasurer in his early twenties while he worked at McElligott’s on Main Street he was currently one of the club’s vice presidents up to the present.

An Accomplished Player

Jerry of course was a very accomplished player in his day and easily played in various positions without any difficulty, be it full-back, midfield or in his later years inside at full forward.

He also served some time as team mentor.

He was one of a number of Cordal players who won a minor county championship with Castleisland district in 1964.

He was also on the famous Cordal team which won the 1970 and last ever Castleisland District League which was played in March 1971.

St. Patrick’s Secondary Team

He was a very prominent player in his school days, being on a very successful St Patrick’s Secondary School team in the early 1960s.

Jerry followed the Kerry team to Croke Park every year. He’d head off up himself, stop off at Junction 14 for breakfast and then head into Dublin for the game. He’d return back home again that night.

To Dorris and all the Coffey and O’Donoghue families we in Cordal GAA Club want to say we were blessed for all he has done for us and we offer our sincerest condolences to all of you.

God rest you Jerry,” – Cordal GAA Club.
