It’s Holiday Season

We’re moving into that magical time of year when our beach resorts around Ireland officially open.

The June bank holiday is that weekend, when sandals and sunblock are the order of the day – even in a gale force wind!

Secondary School students are counting down this week to being put out onto grass for the summer months.

They are eager for the freedom from the dreaded school bell, early mornings and homework.

Flat to The Mat

When half the parish is thinking about a holiday and working on a tan, the other half is working 20 hour days.

They’re getting silage cut, turf (yes, it’s still being cut) dried and home and any other number of rural tasks in preparation for the leaner months of winter.

There’s a real sense of co-operation between both camps, with silage contractors making way for traffic and patience by the general public when stuck behind tractors on bendy roads.

Stay Safe

Stay safe everyone as you work or play this summer.

Make the most of each day, get out and about and celebrate all of the beauty of our surroundings.  How blessed we are to live in God’s own country, Brosna!

Thoughts for Ukrainian Students

But do spare a thought for the Ukrainian students newly settled in Kerry.

For those accommodated at the Earl of Desmond Hotel, the summer months are a time when they will turn inward again, losing that daily connection with their newly formed Kerry friends.

Also, the opportunity at school to improve their spoken English is removed as they are back in that bubble at the hotel where reverting to their native tongue is the easiest option.

It will be a long and tedious summer for these families with limited means and space to enjoy all the pleasures of a Kerry summer.

Let’s hope some initiatives are put in place to improve this situation.
