Castleisland native, published author and retired town planner, Eamon Fleming and myself are conducting a historic tour of the town this evening starting from The Forge Restaurant at 4:45pm.

It’s all part of the ‘Street Festival’ being run by Castleisland Racing Festival Ltd and we hope to be joined by people interested in the development of the town down through the years and people with memories of the areas we’ll be covering.

We hope to get through as much of the town as we can in the hour or so allotted as there’s a showing of Rob McGuire’s Castle of the Island documentary at 6pm at the River Island.

I put a group through this kind of experience about a decade ago before and, as a visit to as many pubs as possible and music were part of the agenda, we only made it about three quarters of the way.

Pub crawling is not on the agenda today so it’s likely that we’ll get across the line in an absolutely upright gait.
