July 1921 Sacrifices Commemorated on Rice’s Height

At the July 10th 1921 commemoration at the republican monument were: Aaron Shanahan O’Mahony; Catherine Kate Shanahan, David Geaney, Tom, Noreen and Mary Prendiville, Shelagh O’Connor and event MC, Kate McSweeney.

On a recent Monday evening the Castleisland Sinn Fein Cumann held its annual commemoration at the monument on Rice’s Height on the Cordal Road.

This was to remember and honour the three men who died there 101 years ago on July 10th. 1921 in a battle with crown forces.

The men: Jack Prendiville, Richard Shanahan and Jack Flynn are remembered there each year for the sacrifices they and their comrades and families made during those turbulent times.

Following a minute’s silence, MC for the evening, Kate McSweeney spoke of the importance of remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of their country.

John Breen read the roll of honour of all from the local battalions who died in defence of the Republic.

Wreaths were placed at the monument and the ceremony concluded with the singing of Amhrán na bhFiann.
