Crazy Insurance Costs Force Cancellation of Races and Day Care Centre Cycle

Castleisland Races Committee Chairman Cllr. Charlie Farrelly and his committee decided to cancel this year’s races at Powell’s Road over insurance costs and Castleisland Day Care Centre Nurse/Manager, Marcella Finn had to make an equally hard decision and cancel the 14th annual charity cycle in support of the centre. ©Photographs: John Reidy

The weather is wonderful these days but the cheeriness of that bit of news is completely lost on insurance companies and their moguls of late.

For the second time in a week, crazily high insurance costs have forced the cancellation of local events in Castleisland which were designed and planned to be of benefit to charitable organisations and causes in the area.

Castleisland Races Cancelled

On Saturday night a meeting of the Castleisland Races Committee decided it couldn’t justify trying to meet a burdensome €70,000 bill for insurance for its planned meeting at Powell’s Road,

Committee chairman, Cllr. Charlie Farrelly said that the meeting had to be cancelled until 2023 at least because of the insurance costs involved.

Decision Deeply Regretted

“It’s a decision we deeply regret because we know, over the years, that the charitable organisations we support often depend on the money we make for them at events like the day at the races.

“Mossie Brosnan had obligingly held on to our option on the land at Powell’s Road but we had to let it go for this year all because of the costs of insurance,” said Cllr Farrelly.

Day Care Cycle Cancelled

A statement from Castleisland Day Care Centre, where the decision to cancel their 19th Sunday leisure and fundraising cycle since 2007 was taken this morning – reads as follows:

“It is with deep regret that Castleisland Day Care and Currow Cycling Club announce the cancellation of Castleisland Day Care Leisure Cycle which was scheduled to take place on Sunday September 4th.

A Great Local Event

“Unfortunately, due to spiraling insurance costs it is not possible to run the event this year.

Since its inauguration in 2007, this family fun cycle has been a firm favourite with both beginner and more experienced cyclists as well as being a great local community event.

“We are saddened that we have had to come to this decision and we trust that cyclists who were planning on taking part in the cycle will understand the difficult decision we have had to make.

Working Towards 2023

“Both Castleisland Day Care and Currow Cycling Club give our assurance that we will work towards resolving the insurance issue and returning the cycle in 2023.

In the meantime, Castleisland Day Care wishes to thank everyone for their continued support of the Day Care and the services it provides,” said Nurse Manager Marcella Finn.
