Young Basketball League Winners Collect Well Earned Medals

St. Mary’s U-12 girls who were winners of the Kerry area board division three league, received their medals at a recent presentation. The girls were coached by Linda O’Connor and Norann Rocha.

With coaches, Denis McCarthy (left) and Eamonn John O’Donoghue are: Anna McCarthy, Millie Hughes, Rachel O’Donoghue, Tessa Reidy, Bríd McCarthy, Katie Crowley, Julie McAuliffe, Sophia Fleming, Anna Kelliher, Abbie O’Donoghue, Julie Donegan. The team also included Isabel Walmsley.

Although the new season is on the way, three St. Mary’s basketball club teams were presented with Kerry Area Board medals during the week.

All three teams had been winners of their respective leagues last season.

U-12 Division One Girls

The U-12 Division one girls had the honour of being the first team in our club to play a competitive game in the 2021-2022 season after the break with Covid-19.

They played Tralee Imperials in this game and took the win by three points; the return fixture was also a close one but St. Mary’s took this game by two points.

They were victorious in all remaining league games having met Kenmare Kestrels, Glenbeigh Falcons, St Joseph’s and St. Anne’s comprehensively both home and away.

Team: Anna and Bríd McCarthy, Rachel O’Donoghue, Katie Crowley, Tessa Reidy, Sophia Fleming, Millie Hughes, Julie Donegan, Isabel Walmsley, Anna Kelliher, Julie McAuliffe and Abbie O’Donoghue. Coaches were: Eamon John O’Donoghue and Denis McCarthy.

U-12 Division Three Girls

The U-12 division three girls had seven games in their division.

The team was victorious in six of the seven, having wins over: TK Cougars, St. Paul’s A, St. Coleman’s, Glenbeigh Falcons, KYCMS and TK Bobcats.

They had many exciting games with a few going down to the wire. The girls had one loss to Tralee Imperials which in turn left a three-way tie for the title and due to the high scores of our girl’s games they were declared deserved winners.

Team: Katie Burke, Ellie Mai Kirby, Kelsie Brosnan, Claire Keane, Clodagh Buckley, Sophie Horan, Poppy Smith, Kayla Roche and Jessica O’Sullivan, Coaches were: Linda O’Connor and Norann Rocha.

U-12 Division One Boys

The U-12 boys’ division one played five games before teams were divided into division one and two.

They had great wins over Kenmare Kestrels, Glenbeigh Falcons, St. Brendan’s, St. Pauls and TK Cougars. In the new round they met St. Brendan’s and St. Paul’s again and won both, they then met St. Bridget’s, St. Joseph’s and St. Anne’s with the games against St. Anne’s being the league decider.

The St. Mary’s boys were determined to take the title and, in this game, they proved from the start just how good they were winning on a score-line of 33 points to 15 Team: Ronan O’Connor, Harry O’Donoghue, Adam Griffin, Liam O’Connor, Pádraig Curtin, Alex Rocha, Aaron McCarthy, David Myers, Darragh O’Sullivan, Donal O’Sullivan, Ryan O’Connor, Olly O’Shea, Cillian Murphy,
