The Brosna Handball Alley restored to its former glory. Let the games begin.

Where Art Meets Sport

We are fortunate to be one of the few parishes in Ireland with a handball alley.

Bringing together strands from our ancient past, Handball is believed to derive from the Tailteann Games and ultimately, in 1884, was brought under the banner of the GAA.

Of course in my day, I don’t recall any handball competitions taking place in the alley. If rumour can be believed, the alley was thought to be the place where, on a moonlight night, courting couples might enjoy a secret assignation.

Fallen out of Favour

But with the advent of modern living and the likes of Tinder, the handball alley had fallen out of favour and looked in danger of disappearing forever. But no more!

Over the past months, some wonderful work has been undertaken to breathe new life into our historic building.

The handball alley is a valuable piece of our parish’s history. Thanks to the work of a dedicated team, the alley has not just been restored but re-imagined.

Artist in Residence

Our artist in residence, Kathy Hurley has created an artwork, made up of various images, to not just decorate but to educate.

Drawing inspiration from our natural world, the surrounding parish and some of its famous occupants (Toby!), the alley has become a vital place again. Take a walk to the alley, hop a ball or two, or simply sit and contemplate.

Another Love Story

Who knows, another love story may begin in the shadow of its great walls.

Many thanks to the team behind this reinvention. We especially acknowledge the creative genius of Kathy Hurley who developed and delivered the concept.
