Housing Developments Held Back for Lack of Waste Water Treatment Facilities

Pa Daly, TD has expressed disappointment at the level of exclusion of Kerry villages from Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien’s Residential Zoned Land Tax plan because, like Scartaglen, they lack waste water treatment facilities.

Sinn Féin TD for Kerry Pa Daly has expressed disappointment at the ongoing lack of investment in waste water treatment plants, stating that it is holding back essential housing development around the county.

Teachta Daly said that it’s disappointing to see the number of areas and town-lands listed as being out of scope for inclusion in Minister O’Brien’s Residential Zoned Land Tax plan.

“This tax is to replace the Vacant Site Levy but will do little to nothing for too many towns in Kerry as they are deemed ‘Out of Scope’ due to the continued lack of investment in waste water treatment infrastructure,” he said.

Scartaglen on Excluded List

“While this measure is designed to enable local authorities to activate land for residential purposes, the list of areas in Kerry that are listed as ‘In Scope’ are far less than those listed as ‘Out of Scope’ and therefore excluded due to the lack of services.

“Abbeydorney, Annascaul, Castlegregory, Baile an Sceilg, Ceann Trá, Scartaglen and Glenbeigh are all on the list of areas  excluded from this initiative.

Left Hand / Right Hand Communication

“We cannot solve the housing crisis when the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing under this government.

“It is not news to any one in the county that these areas are continually refused housing and development due to the lack of capacity in waste water treatment plants.

“I am calling on Minister O’Brien to address these issues with his government colleagues in order that meaningful progress can be made with his Residential Zoned Land Tax plan,” said Teachta Daly in conclusion.
