Edel’s Family and Friends Getting Behind her Fight for Recovery

Edel O’Sullivan with her nearest and dearest, her partner Shane and their little girl, Saoirse.

Edel O’Sullivan is a mother, a fiancée, a daughter, a sister, a teacher and a friend who grew up on Valentia Island, Co. Kerry in Ireland but now resides in London with her partner Shane and their daughter Saoirse.

She’s passionate about Gaelic football, playing with Valentia and Southern Gaels in her youth and in London with Kingdom Kerry Gaels.

Edel is a sister of former Kerry footballer Brendan O’Sullivan – a valued member of the Divanes VW Kerry team at the Stanley Divane Pavilion on Castleisland’s Killarney Road.

Brendan dropped a note for Edel’s story to be shared here and the following is her story to date by family and friends.

2022 started as an exciting year for Edel, having just found her forever home with Shane and finalising plans for their wedding, which was due to take place this New Year’s Eve, but unfortunately, their lives were turned upside down in April.

Brain Tumour Diagnosis

Edel fell ill suffering from headaches, which led to her being diagnosed with a brain tumour known as Chordoma. It is an extremely rare tumour affecting only one in a million people each year.

She underwent surgery in August to remove the tumour. Unfortunately, she has spent the last three and a half months in ICU due to some complications and is now awaiting a bed in a rehabilitation unit.

Doctors have indicated that there is a long road to recovery. Edel’s recovery will require substantial financial support and rehab.

Intense Nursing Support

While she can now understand everyone, Edel needs day-to-day intense nursing support care and physiotherapy. She needs to relearn how to sit up, stand, and walk and relearn how to speak and write. Speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and psychological support are all needed.

Edel is truly one in a million and always gives so much to others – we want to now give her the best care and support she deserves.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for taking the time to read this and for your support on Edel’s journey to recovery.
