The Land Struggle

It was no struggle to step out on a starlit night to visit our revitalised parish hall for the launch party for Thomas Roche’s latest book The Brosna Land Struggle 1876-1916.

The book is not only well researched but an exciting read. It describes the extraordinary sacrifices and efforts of our ancestors to remove the yoke of land-lordism for us here on the hills of Brosna. Facing imprisonment, fines, and intimidation, the women and men of the parish held together looking out for one another.

The work of the land league and ladies land league organised help – both financial and practical – to tenant farmers.

By arranging for crops to be planted and keeping farms going while individuals were imprisoned, to funds for legal assistance, to arranging accommodations for evicted families, their work was a testament to how strong a community is when it holds together.

As we sit down this Christmas in our peaceful parish, let’s raise a glass to the memories of those brave and determined people who went before us, and who sacrificed so much to allow us to live untrammeled.

Well done, Tom, for bringing this exciting slice of Brosna history together in one beautiful book. The Brosna Land Struggle is available from Brosna Post Office, or direct from Thomas Roche on 087 7409639.

Tragedy Strikes the Parish

The whole Parish was shocked to learn of the tragic death of our neighbour Mr. Willie Leahy.

We send our heartfelt sympathies to his wife Anne and their children and grandchildren and his family in Brosna and further afield.

Willie was described as an independent man who loved the outdoors. An energetic and capable man. He has gone far too soon. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.

New Arrival for Daniel and Sarah

Congratulations to Daniel and Sarah McEnery on the arrival of beautiful baby Rian.

He is certainly going to be spoiled by his siblings, parents, grandparents, Anne and Donie and glamorous great gran, Mrs Joan Winters.

Wishing you all a very happy Christmas with your wonderful little boy.
