Grandparents Steal the Show at Pres Catholic Schools Week

Taking part in the Presentation Catholic Schools Week Grandparents’ Day were from left: Lily O’Connor with her grandmother Patricia O’Connor; Rachel and Amy Griffin with their grandmother, Margaret Fleming along with pupil participants, Dominika Oliwniak and Millie Hughes.

Presentation Castleisland recently celebrated its annual Catholic Schools Week with a host of events and activities in the school.

The theme for the week was ‘Walking Together in Faith and Love’, a theme chosen to celebrate the gift of education and recognise the love and generosity of the entire school community: students, staff and home. Each morning, staff and students took a few moments pause from class for prayer and reflection.

Visit to Nano Nagle Place

First year students embarked on a day trip to visit Nano Nagle Place in Cork City. This was a wonderful occasion for students to connect with the origins of the Presentation Order and appreciate the life and legacy of Nano Nagle.

Nano Nagle dedicated her life to the education of young Irish boys and girls, and it is thanks to her that the Presentation Sisters set up a secondary school in Castleisland in 1846.

First years developed a new appreciation of the school and all that it does when they can connect with its founder, and they carry this appreciation with them throughout their school life here.

Students and their teachers enjoyed their visit to the museum, the heritage buildings and the walled gardens.

Grandparents Day

On the final day of Catholic Schools Week, the school celebrated Grandparents’ Day.

Student presentations of their families were on display throughout the school. Grandparents of first and transition years attended a prayer service and performances by the choir in the school hall. There were smiles all round as many grandparents took a step back in time to recall their own educational experiences in the school. Bishop Ray Browne gave a blessing to all and spoke of the special relationship between a child and grandparent in passing on the faith.

Trip Down Memory Lane

The Presentation Sisters also joined in on the occasion to take a trip down memory lane.

Principal Pierce Dargan highlighted the important role that grandparents play in guiding students on their journeys of faith and inclusion in society.

“Students are very proud of their grandparents, and hosting an event such as this reminds us all of how family and school can work together and build relationships that support student development, learning and well-being.

We look forward to hosting further events that build connection with family and the community,” said Mr. Dargan.
