Fr. Tim Galvin and The GAA

Last Friday night saw Fr Tim Galvin’s Month’s Mind Mass take place in Brosna.

It was a wonderful turnout including so many priests – past and present of the parish and home-grown talent in attendance to honour one of our own.

The GAA club put together this short piece, recalling Fr. Tim’s history both as a player and GAA club patron.

Brosna Defeated Desmonds

Fr.Tim has been patron of Brosna GAA Club since 2004. He was an active player with Brosna in the 70’s and 80’s, memorably playing in 1974 with Brosna when it defeated Castleisland in the final of the North Kerry League.

Tim Galvin, as he was known back then, was a keen footballer with his parish. Even his ordination and subsequent move to his Mission didn’t dim his passion for the tangerine and white.

Large Shirts on the Line

In an era before mobile phones, the local trainer John Murphy said he always knew when Fr Tim was home, as passing Galvin’s Cross he’d start to see the extra large shirts blowing on the clothes line.

Fr. Tim would then be told of an up coming game and would step into the full back position. Maurice McAuliffe who usually anchored that position would make way for him, a custom that was a great source of banter between the two friends.

When asked once if his role as a priest was a hindrance to his life as a player, Fr Tim explained ‘When the jersey goes on, the collar stays on the side-line.’

A Good Foot Taller

Famous across the county for playing with glasses, he cut quite the figure.  Yet Fr Tim never had to listen to guff from the opposition about the way he had his glasses rigged up with elastic bands to keep them in place, probably because he was a good foot taller than any forward he might meet.

John Murphy summed it up best: “Fr. Tim was so well liked by his teammates that they were delighted to give him as many games as possible while he was around,” and he added: “Fr. Tim holds the unique distinction of always getting his games even though he never made training,”

Rest in Peace, Fr. Tim, Brosna GAA Club patron, player, brother, uncle, neighbour and friend.

The Late Mrs. Peggy Fitzgerald, nee Roche, Knockaclarig.

GAA Update

Match Alert: There’s Senior Football League action at home this Saturday – April 1st.

Brosna welcomes Piarsaigh na Dromoda to Pairc na Feile. Kick off at 5pm. Looking forward to a big turnout for Round 2 of the senior football league.

Brosna Minors in Semi Final

Match Alert, KnockBrosna Minors have reached the semi final stage and are slated to play on Monday, 3 April.

Time and home venue to be determined. Keep an eye on social media and the pitch white board for final details.

Brosna Hosted Intercounty Action

Another day of intercounty action was hosted in Brosna on Sunday when Kerry LGFA minors took on the mighty Cork minors.

Interestingly, the other two games in the series scheduled for other Munster club venues were called off due to flooded pitches. A big round of applause to everyone in the Parish who, through continued GAA annual membership and weekly lotto purchases, allow our Club to maintain our pitch to the highest standards. It’s a great source of pride to have such wonderful amenities and once our new clubhouse is in place, we will truly be the best of the best.
