There’s huge news again this week of even more success for St Patrick’s Secondary School in Gaelic Football.
On Wednesday of this week the St. Patricks’ U-16.5 team won the Corn Liam Uí hUiginn in a hard fought Munster final.
The opposition on the day was from Our Lady’s Secondary School, Templemore, Co. Tipperary.
St. Pat’s went a goal down after only five minutes in the first half but true to form they kept their composure to gain the ascendency going in at half time leading on a score line of 0-9 to 1-2.
Dennehy and Conor – Crucial Goals
The side from Templemore showed they were not going to be shaken off easily by getting two points in quick succession at the start of the second half.
Killian Dennehy and Conor Cahill got crucial goals to put St. Pat’s in a good position half way through the half on a score line of 2-11 to 1-6.
Again the Tipperary side hit back with a goal of their own to leave St. Patrick’s with a five point lead and 16 minutes left on the clock.
Point for Point
The two teams traded point after point like two gladiators going blow for blow. The Templemore side then got a penalty that they quickly converted to set up a tight finish.
At the final whistle, St. Pats had survived the cauldron of pressure that comes with a Munster football final!
The final scoreline of 2-15 to 3-9 meant St. Pats were bringing the cup – named in honour of Kerryman, former Kerry senior team member and broadcaster Liam Higgins – back to the Kingdom!
Pressure and Expectation
This win is an absolutely huge achievement for this young team. They had seen their older St. Pat’s school mates win a Munster and All Ireland title already this year so in its own way that brought an added pressure and expectation.
This level of sustained success is all thanks to the support of parents, local clubs, the continued commitment of students, teachers, and the excellent coaching they receive in St. Patrick’s Secondary School. Mortás is Dochás – Pride and Hope!
