When Castleisland woman, Marie Galvin-Kearney celebrated a recent milestone birthday with a party and a raft of invitations to family and friends – she made it very clear it wasn’t all about her.

The big bash at Fagin’s Bar was a wall-to-wall, all trappings affair with a cake, candles and entertainment – but Marie’s chosen charity was the real beneficiary of the celebrations.

“I was delighted with the turnout at Fagin’s on the night and I’d like to thank Jerome ‘Fagin’ and Noreen and their staff for allowing me to take over their bar and their home on the night for my birthday party on May 20th,” said Marie.

Fantastic Entertainment

“Thank you to Bryan Murphy for the fantastic entertainment, he delivered a brilliant performance and really added to the party atmosphere. Thanks to Denis Cronin for providing the barbecue.

“A massive thank to everyone who came on the night and donated to such a special cause.

“We had a ball and, to everyone who gave me donations wherever I went over the last few weeks, I want to say a special thank you.

On the night of the party Marie took the mic and with a clink of a couple of glasses she got the attention of the house and promised that she wouldn’t be singing.

A Brush with Cancer

She said that it’s a testament to the people of the Castleisland area on hearing of a charitable cause, they contribute and support the organisers as they did on this occasion.

Soon after the party the counting of the donations began and the total quickly rose beyond her expectations.

“Everybody has had a brush with cancer at some stage whether it’s through a family, friend or neighbour – it’s something we can all identify with and I’m delighted to say that we’ve made €3,922 so far, Marie said.

Total Rests at €4,180

And that total finally came to rest some days later at €4,180.

Because of personal experiences, Marie is adamant that cancer research programmes are the hope for the future.

That’s why she’s investing all her energies and the precious gifts of family and friends and the takings from her birthday bash at Fagin’s to the Breakthrough Cancer Research charity.
