Castleisland Tidy Towns Committee is initiating a request for volunteers to come out for one hour per week and give their time to help keep their town looking its best for the remainder of the summer and into autumn.

Tidy Town Tuesdays will kick off on the coming Tuesday, June 27th. at 7.30pm.

The committee is asking volunteers to meet at The Fountain each Tuesday evening for June, July and August and to give one hour of their time each week to enhance the appearance of the town.

Championing the Cause

Resident groups in many parts of the town are already championing the cause and doing triojan work in keeping their areas clean and tidy and looking well.

The proposed Tidy Town Tuesdays campaign will focus on the town centre and on everything from weed removal to planting to small painting works and general cleanliness.

“All are welcome and all that is needed is to bring yourself along with your civic pride and to give an hour for your town from 7.30pm to 8.30pm each Tuesday evening,” said committee PRO Shane McAuliffe.

Great Work Done

“Great work has been done in recent times by many individuals and organisations in town in painting and enhancing their premises which is great to see .

“The Tidy Towns Committee encourages all property owners to keep their premises neat and tidy and especially to pay attention to upper floors which can sometimes look neglected.

The Tidy Towns Committee comprises of: Sheila Hannon, Mary Walsh, Shane McAuliffe, Jacqueline Bird, Doreen Killington, John Breen with Tom McCarthy and Tadhg McGillicuddy recently joining and representing the business interests.

Back in April 2010

In early April 2010 the small Tidy Towns committee struggled under the volume of the work involved.

Then, a spark of inspiration struck, the few involved lifted their heads briefly and appealed to the people of the locality to donate an hour or so per week to a group effort on behalf of the town.

It worked really well and it gave the committed few a new sense of hope and purpose.

On one of their work evenings a gang from the committee was in active service on O’Connell Demesne and, as the light of the evening was fading, they were treated to an alfresco and impromptu tea party by the one and only Gabie Keane and Nuala her daughter. Nuala had been out as part of the cleaning party and turned co-host when the surprise tea-time came around.

It cheered the group up so much that they rang me to get down there straight away to record the event.

Back to the Future

Back to the future: Shane McAuliffe is urging the people of the locality to come along on Tuesdays at 7.30pm starting on June 27th.

“We guarantee you will enjoy the hour’s work and help in making your town a better place to live and visit for all.

“All equipment and hi viz vests will be supplied. Ni neart go cur le chéile,” arsa Shane agus é ag críochnú leis an seanfhocail cáiliúil.
