Irish-American priest, Reverend Theodore Martin Hesburgh, CSC, Academic and President of the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, from 1952 to 1987, dedicated his life to ‘God, Country and Notre Dame.’

“He desired for the latter a symbol of academic excellence which he achieved by means of a first class library,” according to Castleisland District Heritage project manager, Janet Murphy.

“Castleisland District Heritage is therefore delighted to announce that it has received an order from the University of Notre Dame for copies of its ten publications.

Forging Information Links

“Castleisland District Heritage recently forged links with the University of Notre Dame during research of Castleisland dance master, Professor Patrick Daniel Reidy whose manuscripts are held in its Rare Books and Special Collections repository,” Ms. Murphy added.

“The foresight of Reverend Hesburgh in providing a safe haven for such items is to be applauded. Rev Hesburgh, who was born in New York in 1917 to Anne Marie Hesburgh, daughter of Martin Murphy, an Irish immigrant, died in 2015.

Deeper Study Warranted

“The renowned Hesburgh Library at the University of Notre Dame is named in his memory.

“A portrait of his grandfather, Martin Murphy, is contained in the ‘Theodore M Hesburgh Papers’ in the archive of the university to which he gave so much of his life. It surely invites a deeper study of his Irish roots,” Janet concluded.
