An Garda Siochána – Functional Policing Service Required – Cllr. Cahill

Cllr. Michael Cahill (FF) said that a fully functional policing service is required in all our towns and villages in Kerry and that the Government must commit to providing whatever funds are necessary.

“A fully functional Policing Service is required in all our towns and villages in Kerry and the Government must commit to providing whatever funds are necessary to ensure that this basic societal function is provided,” according to an opening statement from Kerry Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill.

“The downgrading and closure of Garda stations in recent years, has led us to where we are, in rural areas of Kerry, depending on mobile Garda units coming to us in time of need, from the bigger towns,” he added.

Unfit Road Network

Our road network isn’t of a robust enough nature for this to ever be successful and road journeys of 50, 60, 70kms cannot get Gardaí to remote areas, even with emergency lights flashing in jug time. We must return to having Garda Stations in our Communities, staffed and mobilised, to prevent and detect crime and to protect our people” stated Councillor Cahill.

Centralisation Not Working

“Centralised Policing does not work in a county the size of Kerry and I will be bringing the views of our residents to the next meeting of the Joint Policing Authority, to our Senators, TDs and Ministers, to impress upon them, the need to reinstate fully staffed Garda Stations throughout this county” said the Fianna Fáil man.

“It is simply not good enough that any part of the community should endure long delays in receiving Emergency Services” added Councillor Cahill.
