The Late Con Hewitt, 60 Killarney Road and Barrack Street, Castleisland, Co. Kerry
Another of Con Hewitt’s abiding passions was his love of Manchester United as is given away by this picture here with Roy Keane when Con travelled to Old Trafford as part of the Castleisland supporters club of the late 1990s.

The death has occurred of Con Hewitt, 60 Killarney Road, Castleisland and formerly of Barrack Street Castleisland.

May his gentle soul Rest In Peace.

A Life Time in the Trade

There is an air of genuine sadness in the Castleisland area with last night’s announcement of the passing of Con Hewitt  (67) after a brief illness.

Con will be best remembered from the many public house counters he stood behind and served countless numbers of customers in very close to a lifetime in the trade.

I recently emailed him a photograph of himself and Pats Broderick from 1979 and from the bar in McElligott’s town centre shop where Centra is now.

Well read and with a razor sharp wit, you’d want edge up and be sure of your ground before taking Con on in any kind of a verbal joust.

Specialising in Guitar

An excellent musician, specialising in the guitar, Con led and backed many of the Tuesday night traditional music and singing sessions at Kearney’s Bar in recent years.

Pats Broderick and myself had a couple of pints in Kearney’s over the Patrick O’Keeffe Traditional Music Festival weekend. Con and Pats took a frequently interrupted trip down memory lane on that occasion with the odd bit of cordiality woven into the banter between two good old friends.

Vital Role in County Tops Win

Con, along with Eileen Lyons played pivotal roles in the Castleisland Youth Club’s 1975 production of Joseph and his Amazing Technicouour Dreamcoat in which he and Eileen shared the narration duties of the show.

A report in The Kerryman of late March 1975 heaped admiration and praise on the show and its performers as they overcame opposition from Listowel in the county semi-final. There was more to come as the final beckoned in April in Tralee’s Ashe Memorial Hall. And they won it. And Con Hewitt was very much part of that hugely talented ‘youth movement’ in Castleisland at the time.

May God be good to him.
