New Theatre Company to Stage Old Favourite in Abbeyfeale

Súgán Theatre is a new stage company serving West Limerick and North Kerry.

Cast, crew and production team members are proud to present A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams as their opening offering on a string of dates on the Glorach stage in Abbeyfeale later this month.

This production, directed by the multi-talented Susan Browne, boasts a beautiful set designed and constructed by Tom Madigan, with lighting and sound by Helen Hassenfuss and Kieran McAuliffe.

The play will feature a diverse cast of 11 drawn from Limerick and Kerry-based actors from areas including: Limerick, Newcastle West, Castleisland, Knocknagoshel and Killarney!

New Orleans in 1948

“Join us for one hot summer in downtown New Orleans in 1948 when husband and wife Stanley and Stella Kowalski are surprised by an unexpected visit from Stella’s sister Blanche Dubois.  Blanche does not seem well on arrival and as the summer heats up, so does the drama in this small apartment now shared by sisters Stella and Blanche and Stanley,” said cast member and spokesperson, Thérèse Prendiville.

The company’s scheduled staging is set for September 13th, 14th, 15th, 20th & 21st at 8pm nightly at The Glorach Theatre in Abbeyfeale.

New Stage Company
“Súgán Theatre is a new stage company serving West Limerick and North Kerry where storytelling has always been at the heart of entertainment in rural Ireland,” Thérèse explains.

“We’re carrying on from the days of the wandering seanchaí, to gatherings of neighbours and friends on a cold winter’s night to share stories of old and pass the time around the fire.”

“The new company, based in the heart of this tradition, is passionate about stories that stir emotion and get people excited about spending time watching live theatre.

Entertaining, Educating and Provoking

“Like the high-level craftsmanship that goes into the making of a súgán chair, which can last more than a 100 years.

“Súgán Theatre hopes to produce work that not only entertains, educates and provokes, but which draws on rural Ireland’s strong oral tradition to make a lasting impression on the minds of its audience,” said Thérèse with intent.
