A pub quiz held in Fleming’s Bar in Scartaglen at the end of November raised €2,520 between two of Kerry’s leading cancer charities.

The Kerry Hospice Foundation and Recovery Haven will share equally the proceeds from the event which was organised and presented by Scart resident Paul O’Sullivan in honour of his late wife of 29 years, Patricia nee Keating.

A native of Caherciveen, Patricia died in the palliative care unit of University Hospital Kerry early last April.

Giving Something Back

“We were so thankful to both the Kerry Hospice Foundation and Recovery Haven for their care of Patricia that I thought that if I could do anything to give something back I would and the idea of the pub quiz came to me.

“While the event was held primarily in honour of ‘Trish’ I wanted to remember all the other people from the area around here who had died of cancer – including my near neighbour Betty O’Connell who also passed away from cancer last June,” said Paul.

“The pub quiz finally took place here in Fleming’s Bar on the Friday night, November 29th and we got a rake of sponsorship from businesses in Killarney and Castleisland.

16 Tables of Four

A lady down in Dingle, Breege Granville, who became aware of the event and the charities it was supporting, kindly sponsored two nights for two adults and two children in an apartment in Dingle.

“She just overheard me talking about the pub quiz on the bus one day and she told me she wanted to row in with a prize.

“We had 16 tables of four and about €2,500 worth of fantastic spot-prizes of every kind to be won on the night,” he said.

Paul took on the role of quiz-master himself and his nephew, Colm O’Sullivan who travelled down from Tullamore, was the question setter and final adjudicator on the night.

An Annual Event

“We were delighted with the response and the support we got for the event and particularly with the financial results of the quiz – and we’re hoping to make this an annual event for these two great charities,” said Paul in conclusion.

Both the Kerry Hospice Foundation and and Recovery Haven sent representatives to Fleming’s Bar in Scartaglen on Monday evening, December 23rd for the cheque presentations. There, Mary Shanahan and Jacinta Bradley respectively, expressed deep gratitude to Paul O’Sullivan, his quiz hosts, assistants and its sponsors for their kindness and thoughtfulness.
