Donal ‘Duke’ O’Connor sent a note to remind all that St. Mary’s Basketball Club church gate collection will be held this weekend of May 3rd and 4th. 2025.
The collections will be taken up at all masses in the parish in Castleisland, Cordal and Scartaglin. Your support would be greatly appreciated.
The playing of Basketball in Castleisland can be traced back to the 1940s when local leagues were organised on an ad hoc basis.
The game mushroomed from the early 1970s with the coming of the Christmas Blitz.
The popularity and strength of the game today can be judged alone on the success of schools in bringing All-Ireland titles with teams made up from this and neighbouring villages.
