Leaning on experience and a realisation that goes all the way back to the marriage feast of Cana, P.J. Teahan and his team of World Fiddle Day volunteers are preparing to feed their people in Scartaglen over the coming weekend and on Saturday in particular.
The well equipped kitchen in the Sliabh Luachra Heritage Centre in the village will become the festival food hub over the duration of the annual fiddle festivities.
Belying its temporary branding and possible implications, The Fiddler’s Café will offer good food at the most reasonable prices imaginable.
Hunger Won’t be an Issue
Experience from previous years’ food shortages in the village have prompted the setting up of the food hub for the benefit of both musicians and patrons who were often forced, by hunger, to leave the festivities and the village in search of sustenance elsewhere.
Sandwiches of egg salad, ham, ham and cheese, beef and chicken and stuffing as well as tea, coffee, bottled water and a variety of canned minerals with Taytos, gluten free rice cakes and the Purple Snack itself have all made the cut on the menu for the great day. The café will be open to cater for visitors from 11am to 4pm.
Friday Night is Jackie Daly Music Night
As for the musical content of the event: Friday night is Jackie Daly music night. In a Handed Down special at 8pm the phenomenal musical output of the great Kanturk native will be celebrated.
On Saturday the traditional gathering of fiddle players for the annual photograph and tunes will assemble at the O’Keeffe monument at 1.30pm sharp.
Then its west the village road to the heritage centre where Nickie McAuliffe will introduce both the ‘Old Fiddle Case’ exhibit and John Carty at 2pm.
Nickie and John will play a tune from Sliabh Luachra together before the fiddle recital in the centre and there’ll be loads of room for listeners – with food in the café – and drink in the village pubs.
