Desmonds V Brosna Senior Game Postponed as a Mark of Respect
Castleisland Desmonds GAA Club has extended its sincere sympathies to the family and friends of the late Mossie O’Connell of Limerick Road and late of Anglore.
Mossie and his family were great servants of the club on the field of play and at administration level for generations.
Tomorrow’s senior game against Brosna has been called off as a mark of respect to their former player and his extended family.
The late Mr. O’Connell (61) worked in the Environment and Technology department with Teagasc – the agriculture and food development authority from its Tralee offices
Mossie O’Connell was a tough, uncompromising footballer at underage level. He took a very methodical and prepared approach to a game. Even as a youngster, he could read a game – before we knew what that meant. He would marshal his line around him and wouldn’t stand back when the occasion arose.
I got a close-up of his knowledge of the locality one St. Stephen’s Day in the early 1970s when we headed off walking for Cordal. It was one of those fine, frosty days and without a care in the world we found ourselves passing the church in Cordal before we knew it and we were only getting going.
Up hill and down dale we bravely strode for the afternoon until hunger struck. Mossie felt the same pangs as I did and he assured me that he knew a place we could call to. I’m sure it’s a mark of his dependable nature – but I utterly believed him.
His father, also Mossie, used to buy pigs from the man we were pinning our hopes on. Mossie was right and we got fueled up for the evening and a fist of biscuits for the road home. I can’t remember the house but I remember the Lincoln Creams. May God be good to him.

Maurice ( Mossie ) O’Connell, Anglore, Castleisland , Co. Kerry. August 8th 2015. Peacefully at home surrounded by his loving wife and family.
Sadly missed by his wife Ann ( nee Reidy ) son Maurice, daughter Katie and their partners; brothers: Michael and Patrick; sisters: Marian, Imelda and Margaret; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours, work colleagues and friends R.I.P.
Reposing at Tangney’s Funeral Home, Castleisland on Sunday evening from 5pm to 7pm followed by removal to Castleisland parish church. Requiem Mass on Monday at 11am . Burial afterwards in Kilbanivane Cemetery, Castleisland. Family flowers only please. Donations if desired to the Kerry Hospice Foundation c/o Tangney’s Funeral Home.
