Team Garvey’s overcame Galway side Titan’s in the Senior Men’s Division 1 National League game at Castleisland Community Centre on Saturday night.
Garvey’s were without Declan Wall, Declan Culhane and Darragh O’Hanlon due to injury.
Both teams started off strong in what was a very physical contest. Garvey’s took an early lead but scores from Titan’s Chris Coyne and Toms Fabriciuss saw their side go ahead at the end of the first quarter. It finished Titan’s 26 points, Team Garvey’s 25 points.
The second quarter was face paced. John Galvin impressed for Garvey’s. Scores from Andrew Fitzgerald and Seamus Brosnan maintained Garvey’s lead. Titan’s Chris Coyne secured some vital baskets ensuring his side were not far behind. It finished Team Garvey’s 42, Titan’s 38 at half time.
Players began to tire in the third quarter. Garvey’s made good use of their bench, Darragh Jones and Martin Flavin gave brilliant performances. Good rebounding from John Galvin and Declan Cahill in the third quarter saw Garvey’s keep their lead. It took Titan’s half of the quarter to register a score. However in the latter stages of the third quarter Titans returned to scoring form. Scores from Chris McNairney, Emmet Murphy and Toms Fabriciuss saw them close the gap to three points. The third quarter finished Team Garvey’s 54, Titan’s 51.
Titan’s defended well in the fourth quarter but Garvey’s were not willing to let their lead slip. The home sides John Galvin, Declan Cahill and Seamus Brosnan worked hard to keep their lead. It finished Team Garvey’s 76, Titan’s 59. Top scorers for Team Garvey’s: John Galvin 23, Andrew Fitzgerald 15, Declan Cahill 13. Top scorers for Titan’s: Chris Coyne 16, Toms Fabriciuss 14, Gintaras Sedenskis 10.
It has just been announced that John Galvin has been named division one men’s Player of the Month for February.
