Humphrey Murphy Memorial 5K Fun Run on Friday

The proceeds from this Friday evening’s, third annual Humphrey Murphy Memorial 5K Fun Run will go to Glebe Lodge Residential Home which is run by the Kerry Parents and Friends.

The event, which has attracted a huge participation on its previous two outings, will be open for registration at 6-30pm at Desmonds Avenue here in Castleisland. The race/run/jog will then get underway at 7pm. Last year the event raised in the region of €1,600 and every cent went to where it was intended to go.

The late Humphrey Murphy was a great supporter of the Glebe Lodge facility and his memory is now enshrined there and in this annual 5K Fun Run from which ‘The Lodge’ now benefits annually.

When he learned that there were people from Cork at ‘The Lodge’ he went over there and hoisted the Red and White flag on the chimney for them ahead of championship clashes with the old enemy.

Humphrey raised countless thousands of pounds and Euros for a variety of local and national charities. He selflessly worked and introduced many locals to the benefits and joys of running and regular exercise at An Riocht AC. Today’s hugely successful Couch-to-5K programme – which is attracting well over 200 on its designated Tuesday and Thursday evenings since it returned last week – can be traced back to Humphrey’s initiative at the club just before his untimely passing in May 2011.

The memorial run committee and that of the annual races have joined in an appeal to the public to come along and support this and all the events over the weekend.
