The Castleisland Community College ‘Robotics Team’ finished in the runners up spot in the Kerry Robotics Schools’ Championships recently.
As part of an initiative run by IT Tralee, CIT and Vex Robotics, a number of Kerry schools were provided with funding of €800 each to build a robot and programme it in preparation for the competition.
Seven Qualifying Matches
The robots were pitted against each other in a series of games where they tried to score points by carrying out certain tasks.
The students had seven qualifying matches where they had to form an alliance with another school and then challenge two other schools.
Completing Tasks
The robotics earned points by completing certain tasks. These tasks included picking up a ball and putting it into a basket, moving flags from red to blue, flipping an object upside down and getting onto a six inch platform.
Each task had a different point weighting depending on its complexity.
“The championship certainly challenged the students’ engineering and computer coding skills,” said a spokesperson for the team.
