60th. Celebrations at Boys National Topped by Letter from President Higgins

Joyous and all that the recent 60th anniversary celebrations of the Naomh Charthaigh / Castleisland Boys National School were, they were topped off with style by ‘a beautiful letter’ from President Michael D. Higgins.

Known by generations of locals as ‘The Masters’  the school has much to look back on in terms of accomplishments including the school’s growth from a local, rural school to an all-embracing one where children and their families from different countries and faiths are made feel welcome,” said Principal Marina O’Connor.

From National to International

“Perhaps more than any other achievement in the past six decades, the evolution of the school’s multiculturalism and shared appreciation for all cultures is one that is cherished most.

“The school’s profile has been transformed from a ‘national’ school to an ‘international’ school – one that continues to celebrate the arrival of families from across the globe,” Ms. O’Connor continued.

“We take pride in our ethos of embracing diversity and inclusivity. As we celebrate, I wish to thank the community for its continued support over the decades.

Credit to Former Principals

“Huge credit must be given to former principals who, in turn, were committed to providing the best opportunities for the students.

“It is sometimes easier to see ahead when you are standing on the shoulders of giants’ and we look forward to welcoming the community to our school when Covid restrictions are lifted.

“Finally, our celebrations were made even more special by a beautiful letter from President Michael D. Higgins who appreciates all that the ‘Boys National School’ represents in our wonderful community,” said Ms. O’Connor in conclusion.

Message from President Michael D. Higgins

“May I send my best wishes to the staff, pupils, former pupils and Management Board of Naomh Chartaigh Boys’ National School as you celebrate your 60th. anniversary.

For six decades, Naomh Chartaigh BNS has been rising to the challenges of an ever changing and evolving Ireland, constantly committing and dedicating itself to the needs of the pupils in its charge.

Generations of past pupils, now located all over the world, have gone on to make a significant mark on their communities, their workplaces and their wider society.

They are also, I have no doubt, united in a great affection and gratitude for the wonderful start in life they received at Naomh Chartaigh a place they will always recall as ‘their school.’

Naomh Chartaigh continues to play an important role within the community of Castleisland, and in the lives of its pupils and their families.

I am confident that today’s pupils, who are so fortunate to attend Naomh Chartaigh, will also grow up to be a proud testament to the ethos of the school, and will remember their time there with great fondness in future years.

May I wish you all an enjoyable anniversary and continued success and happiness for the future.”
