A serious road traffic accident just outside Farranfore has seen at least 12 people injured this evening. Six of those were Helicoptered to Cork University Hospital and the remainder were taken to Kerry General Hospital. The accident, which happened about 5-30 this evening, involved two vehicles and occurred at an accident flashpoint just two kilometers outside Farranfore on the Killarney Road.
As a result of the crash, which is understood to have involved a minibus and SUV, traffic between Castleisland and Killarney faced major disruption with diversions through Firies having to be brought into emergency service.
Local photographer, Tony O’Brien described the scene as one of pure carnage. “I’ve seen a good few road accidents in my time but the scene on the road there this evening was one of pure carnage. There was debris scattered all over the road and over a wide area. There was complete silence on the scene while I was there. I think that even the firemen and the guards there were shocked themselves,” said Mr. O’Brien.
“It’s an area that has seen many accidents over the years and at least one of them included a fatality at that same spot. Local people have been trying to get something done with the road there for years. There’s a bend and it seems that strangers find the camber in the road hard to deal with here. Locals feel it’s a miracle that no one was killed in this accident here this evening and they’re praying for the recovery of all involved,” he said.
