After Joe Duffy put his considerable media shoulder to the notion of a ‘Fiver-Friday’ in July 2011 the idea really rolled.
It was an idea thrown out there by a businessman well worthy of the title. Mark Begg put in a call to Joe’s RTÉ Radio 1 Liveline programme. It caught the imagination of a nation of shopkeepers struggling to keep the hinges on their doors from rusting over.
Like all good ideas it’s brilliant in its simplicity: A Shopkeeper; tradeswoman /man; solicitors; cafe owners and all service providers will offer something of value for a fiver – on a given Friday – to encourage people to spend that €5 in their own locality.
On his Liveline ‘Fiver Fridays’ Joe is inundated with ideas and offers from businesses around the country. These businesses are often mentioned on the nation’s broadcaster – you couldn’t buy that – well, you could but….
There’s no getting away from Joe Duffy though. During his days as Gay Byrne’s roving reporter, Joe dropped into Crag Cave and did a well flavoured Castleisland programme with people like: Seán Ó Ciardubháin, Michael McGillicuddy, Peter Howarth, Beth Carty, Peggy Teahan, Mary Anthony McQuinn and many more.
