A quick reminder, to whom it concerns, that Peter Browne’s RTÉ Radio 1 traditional music programme the Rolling Wave is devoting its four August Sunday night / Monday evening slots to celebrating the music of Sliabh Luachra.
In the course of the four programmes the piper and broadcaster will be remembering two great fiddle-players from this most musical area on the Cork-Kerry border – Paddy Cronin and Denis Murphy.
The first of the two programmes honouring Paddy Cronin was on last Sunday night and the second is on tonight at 10pm. Tonight’s programme will continue with the tribute concert for Paddy Cronin which took place in the Community Hall in Miltown Malbay in July 2006.
“Many Sliabh Luachra singers and musicians made the journey up the coast to Co. Clare and the result was a tremendous afternoon’s music. Some of those present were: Jacky Daly, Paudie O’Connor, Máire and Aoife O’Keeffe, Connie O’Connell, Jimmy Doyle, Christy Cronin, Jimmy O’Brien and many more,” according to presenter, Peter Browne.
It will be well worth tuning in. Several in the recordings played last week have gone to their eternal reward and I’m thinking about the likes of Séamus Creagh and Paudie Gleeson – God be good to them. The Rolling Wave RTÉ Radio 1 at 10pm. Repeated on Lyric FM on Monday evening at 7pm.
