A weekend of activity in the Castleisland area, the likes of which hasn’t been seen in a while, is winding down with the completion of the An Riocht AC / Lee Strand Kingdom Come 10 Miler and Couch-to-5K Road Race.
Athletes of varying abilities and goals took off from Castle View at a few minutes past 11am this morning and battled with themselves to get through the race and cross the finishing line in a respectable time. Many of those new to the ‘road’ in this instance would be glad to get over the line in any time. That would be achievement enough and an event medal a bonus to them.
Shane Simcox took the men’s 5K race and Tralee’s Shona Heaslip, An Riocht AC won the women’s 5K.
Tim O’Connor, An Riocht AC made it two-in-a-row when he came home alone in the 10-Miler followed by club-mates, Dónal O’Callaghan and Seán O’Sullivan. In the women’s 10 Miler, Kate Murphy from Scartaglin took the honors with Sharon Cahill and Margaret Carlin.
There was a stiffish breeze along most of the exposed parts of the course and many athletes struggled to make the time they did last year. However, Listowel veteran runner, Willie Guiney was anxious to point out that he actually shaved three minutes off his time this year.
The last of the runners were making their way home and I met Cormac O’Mahony heading down town. He had a marathon in Scartaglin yesterday and was going on a lap of honor today. The craic would be mighty in Kearney’s this evening he assured me as the World Fiddle Day Kerry 2015 was being brought to a close for another year.
