Following a volunteer appeal by the Castleisland Tidy Towns committee the existing and long serving members are ‘very heartened’ by the turnout at The Fountain on a misty Tuesday evening of last week.

“It was great to see support from many familiar faces and to meet the new people who came along to volunteer,” said Mary Walsh on behalf of the committee.

“We were unfortunate that the weather wasn’t on our side and we hope that the coming Tuesday evenings will be more conducive to putting our shoulders to the wheel.

Work to Your Strengths
“We are still encouraging more volunteers to come along as there are a lot of places in town that are in need of a good clean,” said Mary.

She also encouraged the volunteers to work to their strengths and if painting or weed control is their thing then go for it.

The October 2022 Tidy Towns adjudicator’s report was one of the most positive in recent years and it commended the community activists who took part in the organised clean-up day in the spring.

“We commend the community on this as it focuses attention on the need to be vigilant on litter, fly-tipping and weed growth.

Schools Involved

“We also admire the fact that the local schools got involved – please commend the teachers for their participation.

“When we visited the town was virtually litter free but unfortunately weed growth was also noticed at kerbs, the base of walls etc.

“We suggest that the litter pick up volunteers also become weed removal volunteers and ask them to bring a hoe or wire brush and to also remove weed growth.

On that note: The Fountain at 7pm on Tuesday evenings is the meeting place for Tidy Towns volunteers until further notice.

With kind thoughts and good wishes to Sheila Hannon.
