The fund-raising event ‘The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party’ – which had been postponed on Easter Sunday due to a bereavement in the family of the proprietors of O Riada’s Bar – is going ahead at O Riada’s on this Sunday, May 4 from 3pm to 6pm.
The local charity registered Animal Heaven Animal Rescue – for which the event is being held – recently moved to its new premises just outside Castleisland. Those behind the effort are anxious to take every opportunity to thank everyone of their army who have donated, fundraised and volunteered to make this possible.
The Mad Hatters’ Tea Party is one of the events set to raise funds for their ongoing and relentless devotion to animal welfare from their base in Cragg West, just outside Castleisland and off the Tralee Road at Rahilly’s Cross.

“A Red Queen, A White Rabbit and a girl called Alice will lead you down the rabbit hole for a fun filled family experience. Lots of kids’ activities are planned…games such as a red rose relay, flamingo croquet, Off with her head…and a Mad Egg Hunt. A Mad Hatters’ Tea Party will be held in the marquee with lots of cool photo opportunities, raffles and giveaways.
Yummy themed goodies will be available and a craft corner will be in place also. Face painting and maybe more surprises. A memorable day will be had in aid of a fantastic cause,” according to the invitation.
Admission is €20 per family or €5 per person. You will receive a personalised pass by order of the Queen of hearts.

Animal Heaven Animal Rescue recently moved its new premises just outside Castleisland just off the L2020. They extend their thanks to everyone of their army who have donated, fundraised and volunteered to make this possible.
Great strides have been made in a short while and through many trials and setbacks. At present the rescue centre is comprised of one main building, which houses the horses and a number of dogs. This is the main arena and while it does have good facilities, the growing number of animals in crisis means that a number of dogs need to be currently housed in temporary structures.
“While they are comfortable and well cared for, we wish to build permanent, purpose built, all weather kennels, capable of housing up to 200 dogs with proper veterinary facilities.
If you follow AHAR on Facebook you will know that Suzanne Gibbons and her team of volunteers take dogs from Tralee, Cavan and Monaghan pounds on a regular basis. They rescue and feed horses in crisis from the length and breadth of the country.
“Many animals come to us in an emaciated condition, needing constant care as well as veterinary care. All animals are vaccinated,wormed, microchipped and neutered. All horses are vaccinated, microchipped, gelded, shod and passported.
All of this is a costly business, with the centre often housing up to 300 abandoned, unwanted furbabies. As well as investing in facilities, we are trying to put AHAR on a firm financial standing for times to come and, the equine and canine crisis in this country is only worsening.”
The ‘Mad Hatter’ Sunday afternoon at O Riada’s in Ballymacelligott could be your opportunity to support the largely unseen, animal rescue work going on at the new and still developing centre.
