Crokes V Legion – An age-old Rivalry

Dr. Crokes and their neighbours and old rivals Killarney Legion will go toe-to-toe in the third round of this year’s Kerry Senior Football Champion on this Sunday, July 13th at 6 30 PM at Lewis Road in Killarney.

Thirty years ago, next month, the U-12 teams from the same two clubs battled it out in Fitzgerald Stadium for the 1984 East Kerry Championship title. Legion got the upper hand on that occasion. I was sent to cover the game photographically by the late Harry MacMonagle for the ‘Now and Then’ Newspaper. I did the pictures and the captions and Harry padded them out with a few lines of local knowledge on the state of the relationship between the clubs at the time and on the game itself.

It was a thrilling game which was described by every observer there as “the best game of football seen so far that year.”

“Crokes wiped out a 0-3 to 1-8 deficit to take the lead by a single point with six minutes remaining. However, in a welter of excitement Legion came back to add a further goal and a point to run out four point winners.”
