The annual presentation of cheques, which automatically follows the Castleisland Races and its associated events, was done without ceremony at Tom McCarthy’s Bar on Main Street here on Friday night.
A total of €3,860 was presented to the nominated charities and they are as follows: Acquired Brain Injury, Castleisland Branch was represented by Lisa Spogler and James O’Donoghue and they were presented with a cheque for €1,210; Glebe Lodge Residential Centre was represented by Joan Broderick and Seamus O’Connor and they received €1,000.
Castleisland Tidy Towns Committee was represented by Sheila Hannon and Mary Walsh and they received €500. Castleisland and District Social Club, represented by Tara Howarth and Betty Riordan, received a €1,000 boost. A donation of €150 was made to the St. Patrick’s Day Committee to cover the cost of the band on the day.
The race committee has raised and presented up to €113,000 one hundred and thirteen thousand euros to local charities to date. It raises its funds for the various charities through the race meetings and the Humphrey Murphy Memorial 5K Fun Run and with a dance in more recent years.
The committee is grateful for the continued support from all of its sponsors without which, they claim, none of this would be possible.
They conveyed a special word of thanks to their main sponsor, the London based Mort Reidy, Building Contractor of Knockachur and to Maurice Brosnan who kindly and willingly puts his land at their disposal for the races each year.
