Desmonds Ladies are Munster Intermediate Football Champions following their five-point win over Clare Champions, Kilmihill In the Munster final played in Kilmallock on Sunday.
Kilmihill got off to a quick start and lead by two points after as many minutes. Andrea Murphy raised Desmonds first white flag after six minutes of play.
In spite of the fact that Castleisland ladies were dominant for most of the period of play, Kilmihill went further ahead and lead 04 to 01 after eight minutes of play.
Desmonds finally found the range points from Steffie Murphy, Aine O’Connor and two from Lorraine Scanlon saw them lead by one point at the mid way point of the half.
The turning point of th game came in the 16 th minute after a goalmouth scramble involving four players. Andrea Murphy punched to the net for Desmonds only goal of the game. Desmonds enjoyed a lot of possesion but only managed a point from Andrea Murphy as Kilmihill added two more as they went in at the break with the Kerry ladies 1-6 to 0-6 in front .
Lorraine Scanlon made it 1-7 from the throw-in. Kilmihill, lead by Clare county star Eimear Considine, got through the Desmonds defence to come within one point.
It was then that Desmonds stars shone with Aisling Leonard dominating midfield, Cait Lynch holding the very dangerous Considine and Rachel Cronin attacking at will, Desmonds powered on with fine points from Leanne Mangan ,Rachel Cronin and they lead by 1-14 to 1-7 with nine minutes left to play.
Kilmihill had their chances and were narrowly wide on two occasions. The first was saved by Melissa Holland from a close in free.
As the clock ticked down the Clare ladies threw everything at Desmonds but they held on for a memorable win.
This was a good performance by Desmonds but they face tough challenges ahead as they head to Edinburgh In Scotland to play in the All Ireland championship quarter final within the next couple of weeks.
Fund-raising Pub Quiz
With that trip in mind the Desmonds ladies committee members are organising a pub quiz fundraiser on this Friday night in Browne’s Bar at 9-30pm.
The committee would appreciate your support on the night.
Desmonds Lotto now at €2,100
There was no winner of the jackpot draw for €2,000 in Fagin’s Bar last weekend. The numbers drawn were: 6, 8, 28 and 31. The next draw for a jackpot of €2,100 will be on Saturday,November 1st.
