Women Lucky to Escape Serious injury as Car Ignites

Three young women from the Mallow area of North Cork had a lucky escape early this afternoon when the Volkswagen Polo they were travelling in burst into flames seconds after an impact with another vehicle.

The accident happened at the Gortatlea Mart junction off the Tralee to Castleisland road and just six kilometers from Castleisland.

A vehicle, which was turning off the main road onto the secondary road, was awaiting an opportunity to cross when the Volkswagen crashed into it from the rear.

Witnesses said the car burst into flames immediately on impact and that the three occupants were lucky to escape with only minor injuries as it became engulfed in seconds.

The injured women were taken to Kerry General Hospital and their injuries were described by witnesses and not life threatening.

The occupant of the other vehicle was not injured.
