Weather Kind – Crowd and Gate up at Castleisland Races

The weather was kind to the 2015 Castleisland Races at Powell’s Road on Sunday. The ‘gate’ told the organisers that numbers attending throughout the day were up on last year.

“Yes, there was a good collection at the gate this year and that’s good news for the senior citizens’ houses, repair fund,” said PRO Pat Hartnett.

“The day went like clockwork, we had no hitches, the crowds were up and there were little or no injuries to animals or humans taking part – and that means a lot,” said Mr. Hartnett.

‘The fine day makes a huge difference to an event like this. People were able to hang around and enjoy the races and the company and there was a huge number of children here this year,” he said.

The Castleisland Races Committee has been responsible for the distribution of the impressive total of €113,600 to local charities in recent years. That figure is expected to rise sharply after the weekend’s activity at Powell’s Road as is the presentation to Glebe Lodge from Friday night’s Humphrey Murphy Memorial 5K Road race. In 2014 the committee presented €3,860 to local charities.
