Castleisland native, Tralee resident, Tommy Sheehy has just completed another of his annual and grueling cycling trips to France.
Tommy, a son of Kitty and Ned Sheehy, has been undertaking these Enable Ireland fundraising trips for the best part of the past decade and has raised an average of €11,000 per trip for the charity.
On this trip he was part of a group of five Irishmen and was accompanied by Mark Kelliher from Tralee and three cyclists from Dublin. The encountered temperatures of 35 degrees as they climbed some of the toughest peaks – many of which have featured in the Tour d’France.
He was first to the summit of the famous Alpe d’Huez and had time to have a photograph taken there while he was waiting for the boys. Alpe d’Huez is one of the most iconic Tour d’France climbs and is regularly featured on TV coverage as it has hosted so many stage finishes.
Tommy expressed his thanks to all the Castleisland people who contributed to a total of €11,000 raised for Enable Ireland Kerry branch this year.
These funds are used locally to provide services for children and adults with disabilities. The services provided includes: physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and a range of other services to help support children who attend the centre. Enable Ireland works closely with families who attend and ensure each child leads as full and independent a life as possible,” Tommy explained.
