A charity event billed as An Old Style Working Day is being organised for this Sunday, September 6th in Ballymacelligott at 1pm. with an admission fee of €5.
The event, the first of a few similar days in a weather dependent schedule, is being held in aid of the Kerry Hospice Foundation.
A field beside Ó Riada’s Bar and Restaurant has been chosen as the venue and the day will be all about saving hay in the old fashioned way.
The skills and sheer hard labour involved in ‘knocking a meadow’ with a scythe, the turning and gathering of the hay for the wynd will all be on display on Sunday.
Chief organiser, Moss Trant said that the event is a revival of great days out the vintage hay-making enthusiasts last had about ten years ago.
“If the weather is suitable we’ll have a day of old style, steam threshing of oats near the Half Way Bar in Ballymac in October. There’s a lot of interest in that style of farming from the old days and if all goes well for us we’ll have a couple of great days out,” said Moss.
