A Belgian Blue Heifer from a farm in Knocknagree won the Supreme Champion honours at the annual Weanling Show and Sale in Castleisland Co-op Mart on Monday.
The event attracted a huge turn-out of exceptional quality stock and this was well reflected in the prices paid.
Mart Manager Richard Harnett commented that, on the day, weanling bulls averaged €2.50 per kg, with heifers averaging around €2.70 per kg.
He added that the younger, lighter weanling was in most demand – with the top lots here making well over €3.00 per kg.
The prize for Supreme Champion of the Show went to owner, Jerry Devitt, Doon, Knocknagree, for a Belgian Blue heifer which weighed 380 kgs and sold later for €1,910.
This show and sale gets the weanling sales season underway in earnest at Castleisland Co-op Mart every Monday.
Then, feeders from all over the country start to buy cattle for the autumn and exporters look to fill their orders.
