Castleisland Members’ Golf Club has lined up a raft of high profile competitions for its Tulligubeen course for the coming year.
Incoming captain, John Manton announced an impressive list for 2016 as he cast an eye back over one of the most satisfying and successful seasons in the club’s 14 year history.
Mr. Manton is an Abbeyfeale based native of Ballinasloe, Co. Galway. He’s looking forward to driving the club to the next level in the course of his captaincy. He is pleased that the club has attracted some new members, male and female, from Ardfert Golf Club which is closing this month.

“This will be a great boost to our club and hopefully make us more competitive in inter club competitions next year,” said Mr. Manton.

The Sliabh Luachra Cup
One of the competitions to catch the eye is the ‘cup competition’ in honour of the memory of the late, Dick Fitzgerald.
“This year the club will host an inter golf society competition for the Sliabh Luachra Cup kindly sponsored by the Fitzgerald family of the Woodlands Hotel in Adare in memory of Dick Fitzgerald. The Castleisland native was born in Laccabawn and just across the fields from the where the club course is now.

The late Dick Fitzgerald's memory is to be honoured on a golf course in fields he knew as a boy.

“The late Dick Fitzgerald, who passed away on the last day of September 2014, was a keen golfer himself and a great character and we’re delighted that his memory will live on in Castleisland through this annual competition,” said Mr. Manton.

Successful Year
Castleisland Members’ Golf Club is winding down after a very successful year.
Just recently, the members voted in the 2016 business plan presented by Jason Cattigan and Ben Foley at a meeting at the River Island Hotel.
On Monday the senior gents had their last Golf outing and their Christmas party which was an evening of ceoil agus craic in the club-house.
The Christmas hampers competition, played over three Sundays, was kindly sponsored by Garvey’s SuperValu in Castleisland. This was a very competitive affair and the main prize winners to emerge were: Stephen Crooks, winner; TJ Galvin, second and Denis Galvin in third place.

Delighted and Privileged

“Castleisland Members Golf Club is delighted and privileged to be chosen to host the Pierce Purcell GUI Competition on May 28th and 29th – 2016 and the junior/senior foursomes competitions on Saturday, June 25th.
“The new course layout has impressed all who played  there this year and, with new machinery, we are looking forward to showcasing our course and club to all.
“We offer great deals to society golfers and will have new golf buggies for hire. The club will hold the scratch cups for minor/junior/intermediate and senior players on dates in August which are yet to be confirmed,” said Mr. Manton.

The ladies wing of the club has selected Marian O’Connor as its 2016 captain.
