Ó Riada’s, Sharon Shannon and Jackie and Matt

It’s not the kind of news which organisers of events up and down the country wish to hear in the run-up to the Season of Goodwill.

PJ Teahan and his Handed Down / World Fiddle Day colleagues, Mick Culloty and Tomás Mac Uileagóid were informed that they wouldn’t be receiving Arts Council of Ireland funding for their 2016 activities – which includes the village packing, World Fiddle Day Kerry celebrations in Scartaglin in May.

Ó Riada’s Bar & Restaurant has stepped into the breach for the January 23rd Handed Down programme when Jackie Daly and Matt Cranitch will feature in a programme of entertainment they have titled: The Man from Kanturk.

World renowned box-player, Jackie Daly will be interviewed by Matt Cranitch and they’ll play a few tunes in the course of their chat at the Scartaglin Heritage Centre from 8pm sharp.

Meanwhile, I mentioned here a couple of weeks ago that Sharon Shannon is making a return trip to the aforementioned Ó Riada’s in Ballymacellogott early in the new year. Last year’s concert was sold out before Christmas and tickets for the January 8th 2016 date are also flying and another sell-out gig is on the cards.

Christmas and Women’s Christmas presents accounted for a great portion of the ticket sales last year and it would appear that it’s going in the same direction this year. Tickets at €20 each can be booked at: 087 20 64 119.
