The Scartaglin based rural transport co-ordinator, Local Link Kerry has announced the introduction of a new service – Route 283 which will commence on Monday, May 23rd. This route will service areas including: Currow, Currans, Kerry Airport, Farranfore and Firies into Tralee.

Management of Local Link Kerry has invited members of the public to alert them to gaps in the market or areas where rural transport service does not exist.

The service will offer a three-inbound and two-outbound service to and from Tralee on a six-days-a- week basis from Monday to Saturday.

Welcome Commitment

The commencement of this service is a welcome commitment to public transport in Kerry by the National Transport Authority.

It will provide travel options for people living in the areas to access employment, education, health services or social outings. Passengers can also make onward journeys from Farranfore or Tralee.

Local Link Kerry has grown out of the former Kerry Community Transport Ltd and it operates as an agent of the National Transport Authority (NTA).

Rural Transport Programme

It currently provides over 120 return services weekly across all of Kerry under the Rural Transport Programme. These services are being delivered by over 40 local bus operators and, in 2015, over 131,000 passenger trips were recorded.

“In addition to our primary function of developing and managing rural transport services, our office plays an important role as transport co-ordination units.

“We are tasked with embedding integration within transport service planning. We do this primarily by co-ordinating travel needs to health, social and education and employment opportunities,” said Carmel Walsh, Local Link Kerry general manager.

Combating Isolation

“Rural transport plays a major role in combating isolation and is a model of partnership where key sectors actively engage in planning and developing transport services that ensure equality of access for all.

“If anyone can identify the need for a public transport service in their area I would ask them to please contact us” said Ms. Walsh.
