A Castleisland teenager has just taken a major step in the world of sport. Representing Killarney Golf Club, Luke Walsh won the Munster U-15 Amateur Golf Championship title in Carrick-On-Suir on Thursday.

Luke, a son of Moss and Noreen Walsh, took up the game in 2010 with lessons from David Keating – the head PGA tutor in Killarney at that time.

His progress was rapid and remarkable. He was selected on the Kerry U-13 team that year. He holds the distinction of being the youngest ever member of a Kerry golf team.

Represent Kerry

He continued to represent Kerry for five years at that age level. He was a member of the Kerry U-13 team which won the Munster title for the first and only time and couple of years ago. On that occasion he also took the prize for the best gross with a three-over-par round.

His list of titles to date includes: Kerry U-13; Munster U-12; J.B. O’Shea U-14 title and a variety club competitions in Killarney. He was selected on the Munster U-14 interprovincial team last year and competed on a number of Killarney senior club teams.

Third Year in St. Pat’s

Luke Walsh attends St. Patrick’s Boys’ Secondary School in Castleisland and is entering third year. A source close to the young golfer confirmed that Luke is a highly talented player and is very committed to the game.

“He has all that, but, he also possess an incredible work ethic and that’s vital in this game and, indeed, in any path he takes in life,” – he said.

Needless to say, we’ll surely be hearing a lot more about Luke’s progress on the courses of the country and beyond – if he decides to follow the course his natural talent is so clearly setting for him. Can you imagine the excitement in Castleisland and Scartaglin. Go on Luke !
