In the wake of a series of weather forced postponements reaching back to early September, the Dick Fitzgerald Memorial Cup was eventually played for over the October bank holiday weekend.

Castleisland Golf Club hosted the event in ideal weather conditions.

“This tournament was originally to be played in September, but it was rained off on two occasions,” club captain, John Manton explained.

Eventually Completed

“The organising committee was pleased that the tournament in memory of the very popular Castleisland native, Dick Fitzgerald of the Woodlands House Hotel & Spa in Adare was eventually completed. The conditions and the course over the weekend were fabulous,” said Mr. Manton.

The late Castleisland native, Dick Fitzgerald’s memory was eventually honoured on a golf course in fields he knew as a boy.

Dick Fitzgerald was born in Laccabawn and only across the fields from where the golfers honoured his memory at the weekend. After his passing on the last day of September 2014, Colm Kirwan and myself did our own pieces here in his memory.
