Sinn Féin TD for Kerry, Martin Ferris has asked Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys, to fully investigate incidents of tourists paying large sums of money to shoot Red Deer stags in Kerry.
“Minister Humphreys needs to act swiftly to ascertain the facts of these incidents and needs to explain how situations like these are allowed to happen.

“Killarney Red Deer are part of our rich heritage and are an iconic symbol in Kerry, they should not be sold to the highest bidder to be shot for sport.

“We hear of rich tourists travelling around the world to shoot rare and endangered animals and we in Kerry should not be linked to this type of tourism in any way.

“I have asked the Ceann Comhairle that these incidents be discussed in the Dáil so that the Minister can answer the many questions that arise,” said Deputy Ferris.
